Share "Your" Thoughts

Visual Communications class opened my way of visual looking and creating images. The class taught me to be visually communicating with anything and everything viewed. Out of all the chapters in the visual communications class book only four chapters have stuck out to me; Chapter one, four, seven, and thirteen.
Chapter one was titled Visual Communications and discussed the three important concepts involving visual communications. Adous Leonard Huxley discussed sensing, selecting, and perceiving.  He taught people how to analyze images. I also really enjoyed the visual communication circle dance. The visual communication dance was a well organized thought process of how people retain the knowledge of visual communications. Visually seeing and reading that organized process helped me have a better understanding of visual communications.
Chapter four is titled visual persuasion and talked about persuasion and propaganda. I really enjoyed this subject and the assignment that went along with the chapter. Aristotle discussed ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is a creditable source being given. Logos is a logical argument being given. Pathos is a emotional appear to a audience. Propaganda on the other hand is all about faith topics, negative connotation, and war posters. Shock advertising is sex based advertisements.  I really enjoyed this chapter because one day I will become a journalist and somehow and shape or form will have to be writing based on propaganda as well as persuasion stories.
Chapter seven is titled typography and is all about the printing era. Print is used throughout novels, graphics, designs, and journalism. The printing of written material was a rapid growth and an explosion of the Renaissance Europe.  Printing was raised letters that were then pressed down by a screw driven press on a sheet over the letters resulting in a image of text.  The printing was also reused and invented in Germany. Printing was extremely rapid growth during the industrial revolution (US 1846). The linotype setting machine was invented in 1884. The keyboard was invented by Oltmar and speed the printing era along. Photography was then invented in 1826.
Chapter thirteen was titled television. Television when it first appeared in the golden age 1950’s black and white was easy criticized. The good points with television was educating and entertaining the public. Television included news coverage with satellites. There was no editing because of film.  Television was a great way for politics. The first broadcast political debate was Kennedy vs. Nixon. All together there were three channels and a total of 12 used by rabbit ears. Mergers were with movie studios. Soon the camera was used with transmission modes and receiver systems. Rating and stereotypes and sexual violence were used. Over one billion television sets worldwide.

Chapter 6:Visual Analysis:Personal Image Analysis Assignment

The image I choose was Muhammad Ali boxing his opponent. When I first saw the image my personal reaction was intensity and fear. The image throughout history is well known based on Muhammad Ali’s great athletic abilities in boxing. The image of Muhammad boxing was around the year 1975. The image represented the sport of boxing and the connection of the athletes. The camera helped place these photos for memory of the best fights seen and helps portray what was seen live. The image of Muhammad Ali was an action shot taken by a photographer through black and white film. The image seems of good quality. The ethics mantra is shown as success in the photo because Muhammad Ali is getting his “job” of boxing accomplished. The picture does not show any justice for the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule is having an individual try and be as humane as possible and not to harm anything through actions. Hedonism as the original intent proves the picture of not having any ethical relation. However, the modern use of Hedonism shows the photographer took these pictures to gain money and personal pleasure. The Golden Mean relates to the picture through black and white film and was used to put in the newspapers for people to look at and get the word out about boxing. If you break of the idea of categorical and imperative through boxing would be justified based on the rules of the game and outcome. But, the meaning together does not follow the correct outcome. There is harm in boxing and no positive outcome. The boxers don’t form any type of utilitarianism because there is no large benefit to the community. The image may teach people to not fight based on the outcome of one boxer, but it depends how gruesome it gets. The veil of ignorance shows that two mean are the same and are fighting for the chance to win. The culture perspective is represented throughout the picture based on Muhammad Ali as one of the best boxers of all times. The image shows experience and hard work through becoming an African American athlete. The image represents hard work and intense athletic ability. The picture also shows a time and place and the things that went on during that time period. The photo also represents a famous boxer and all time fighter.
The image I choose was Barak Obama giving a speech. When I first saw the image my personal reaction was sincerity and seriousness. The image of Obama will forever be remembered based on his ability to speak and let alone be the first African American President. The image was approximately in the years of 2008 to present day. The image represents Obama discussing American issues to the world. The photograph will be a great memory to America because Obama is so great with words and is the first African American President. The image of Obama giving the speech was taken by a professional photographer through color imagery. The image is of extreme good quality. Obama through the photo represents ethic mantra based on getting his job done as a president to America. The president in the photo is representing the Golden Rule and following it by trying to be as humane as possible and not to harm anyone. Obama follows Hedonism somewhat. He is showing pleasure in being the president and getting the job done. The same time, Obama IS worrying about the future. Obama’s number one job is to work with the present and the future of America. The photographer took this picture to have as memory but also to gain some personal income. The Golden Mean relates to the picture as color and used on the internet or any type of media source to show the president speaking. Obama is trying to portray the idea of categorical imperative ethics by having no harm in having a positive outcome for America today. Obama is definitely portraying the idea of utilitarianism by having a large benefit to the community. The image of Obama being serious may get people to follow his lead and start taking issues much more serious. Obama is representing veil of ignorance by showing America we are all the same fighting for the right to make things work. The culture perspective is showing Obama speaking to America but being the first African American president. The culture is very important because of all the issues that went on between African American and Caucasian people in the past. The picture represents acceptance and justice. The picture also shows the experiences that Obama had to take to get there and hard work.  The image represents the first African American president, seriousness, and sincerity. The picture also represents the time and place of the speech, historical background.

Greatest Influencial Graphic Designer

Born in the Bronx in 1920 the world was not prepared for the upcoming graphic designer. The boy who later became a talented designer was known for always drawing and creating new unique pictures. Later on, the talented art designer became a master of film and title design. The man that I am speaking of is Saul Bass. Saul Bass was very educated in graphic design and attended Brooklyn College part of the Art Student League in New York.  After college, Saul Bass worked as a freelance graphic designer and eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1946. In 1950, Bass opened his own studio designing advertisements until Otto Preminger asked him to design a poster for the 1954 movie called “Carmen Jones.” Preminger really liked the result and asked Bass to design the title sequence as well. Saul Bass collaborated with the best including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, and Martin Scorsese. Saul Bass created over 50 title sequences for Otto Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, John Frankenheimer, and Martin Scorsese (www.designmuseum.org).

Some movies and years that Saul Bass has worked on:
  • Carmen Jones (1954)
  • The Man with the Golden Arm (1955)
  • Vertigo (1958)
  • Anatomy of Murder (1958)
  • North by Northwest (1959)
  • Psycho(1960)
  • Exodus (1960)
  • Ocean’s Eleven (1960)
  • West Side Story (1961)
  • It’s aMad,Mad,Mad,Mad World (1963)
  • Big (1988)
  • Goodfellas (1990)
  • Casino (1995)
Saul Bass is an extraordinary artist and proves that with all of his works. Saul Bass today is influential on other graphic designers and has played a major role on the way art is visually looked at. Personally, I thought writing about Saul Bass was going to be boring, boy was I wrong. I learned so much from his art and especially his value of what he did. I look at graphic design different with more appreciation. With all his hard work and visual outlook he has not only impacted the world but me as well.
