Greatest Influencial Graphic Designer

Born in the Bronx in 1920 the world was not prepared for the upcoming graphic designer. The boy who later became a talented designer was known for always drawing and creating new unique pictures. Later on, the talented art designer became a master of film and title design. The man that I am speaking of is Saul Bass. Saul Bass was very educated in graphic design and attended Brooklyn College part of the Art Student League in New York.  After college, Saul Bass worked as a freelance graphic designer and eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1946. In 1950, Bass opened his own studio designing advertisements until Otto Preminger asked him to design a poster for the 1954 movie called “Carmen Jones.” Preminger really liked the result and asked Bass to design the title sequence as well. Saul Bass collaborated with the best including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, and Martin Scorsese. Saul Bass created over 50 title sequences for Otto Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, John Frankenheimer, and Martin Scorsese (www.designmuseum.org).

Some movies and years that Saul Bass has worked on:
  • Carmen Jones (1954)
  • The Man with the Golden Arm (1955)
  • Vertigo (1958)
  • Anatomy of Murder (1958)
  • North by Northwest (1959)
  • Psycho(1960)
  • Exodus (1960)
  • Ocean’s Eleven (1960)
  • West Side Story (1961)
  • It’s aMad,Mad,Mad,Mad World (1963)
  • Big (1988)
  • Goodfellas (1990)
  • Casino (1995)
Saul Bass is an extraordinary artist and proves that with all of his works. Saul Bass today is influential on other graphic designers and has played a major role on the way art is visually looked at. Personally, I thought writing about Saul Bass was going to be boring, boy was I wrong. I learned so much from his art and especially his value of what he did. I look at graphic design different with more appreciation. With all his hard work and visual outlook he has not only impacted the world but me as well.
